Ross Douthat of the NY Times has an interesting take on a what sounds like a provocative new book, Red Families v. Blue Families: Legal Polarization and the Creation of Culture. The book has a liberal-leaning thesis, which Douthat sums up this way: Culturally conservative “red America” is "stuck trying to sustain an outdated social model. Supreme Court Nominee: Elena Kagan
She is popular among a diversity of faculty at Harvard Law School, but her lack of judicial experience may be a liability in the confirmation process. Last year, the Senate confirmed her as solicitor general on a 61-31 vote, with seven Republicans voting yes. So I imagine she will be confirmed. It is estimated that 20% of all foreclosures today are strategic -- people who could pay their mortgages simply choosing not to. They deem that the benefits of getting foreclosed and moving outweigh the costs of a ding on their credit. Perhaps they can find a comparable rental property for less than their mortgage. So they stop making their payments, pocketing this money for a few months, then "walk away" immediately before foreclosure.
